Protecting Wetlands is a Climate Peace and Security Imperative

As we commemorate World Wetlands Day today, we are reminded that Uganda’s wetlands are under escalating threat from climate change, rapid urban expansion, and extractive development. These pressures compounded by gender inequality, unresolved land disputes, and weak governance are turning wetlands into flashpoints of climate insecurity and conflict.

Protecting wetlands is not environmental charity; it is a peace and security imperative. Our climate resilience, cultural heritage, and prospects for sustainable peace depend on it.
